Interpretation

An interpreter is a mediator for people facing language barriers.

I convert a thought, an expression, in a source language to an expression with an identical meaning in the target language. My role as an interpreter is to convey every semantic element (tone and register) and all the aims and feelings of the message that the source language speaker directs to the target language recipients.

Telephone interpreting

The service provider sets up a telephone conference, for example, between two or more people who don’t speak the same language, and places a liaison interpreter between them who will translate the conversation bit by bit. The service is the same as liaison interpreting, except that the speakers are not physically present.

Video remote interpreting

Interpreting by video is a development of telephone interpreting, which became possible with the use of the Internet. Video conferencing for two or more participants can be set up simply by using various programs and tools, some of which are free.

Simultaneous interpreting

In simultaneous interpreting, participants wear headphones and the interpreter translates the speaker’s words into the target language as quickly as possible from the source language, while the source speaker speaks without interruption.

Liaison interpreting

As the name suggests, the liaison interpreter’s role is to liaise between two parties that don’t speak the same language. The speakers have to stop to give the interpreter time to translate the content of the conversation. This technique is commonly used in business or training meetings.

Consecutive interpreting

The consecutive interpreter’s role is quite similar to the liaison interpreter’s one. He sits near the speakers, follows the content of the conversation, takes summary notes and uses these to provide a summary translation of the content of the conversation. It’s used in situations where there is a small number of participant. For instance in courts, in press conferences, negotiations, incentive travel or short term trainings.
